Evergy invites area youths to annual deer hunts

Applications will be accepted through Oct. 1

TOPEKA, Kan., Sep. 10, 2019 — The Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks, and Tourism, and Evergy invite all eligible youths to participate in the 2019 youth deer hunts Oct. 12 and Oct. 13 at Wolf Creek Generating Station, in Burlington, and Dec. 4 to Dec. 15 at the Jeffrey Energy Center, in St. Marys.  The hunt is open to youths 12 to 18.  Hunters 16 and older must possess a hunting license and hunter education certificate or an apprentice license for those who do not have a hunter education certificate.

Each young hunter must be accompanied by an adult mentor to participate.  Enclosed blinds, orange outer garments, and other necessary gear will be provided.  A limited number of slots will be awarded to applicants on a first-come, first-served basis with priority to those with little or no deer hunting experience.  Game tags and basic game processing will be provided at the Wolf Creek location.

A safety day is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 5 at Black Bear Bosin in Burlington and Saturday, Oct.19 in St. Marys at the Jeffrey Energy Center.  During the safety day, each youth will have the opportunity to practice shooting with a deer rifle and become familiar with the gear that will be used during the hunt.  Some deer rifles will be available for use during the safety day and the hunt.

Successful applications and their mentor will be paired with an experienced volunteer hunting guide during the hunt. Hunters are encouraged to bring their own rifle, but one can be provided if needed.

The annual youth deer hunts are designed to encourage youths interested in learning about hunting to give it a try. The hunts provide safe and fun hunting experiences in an area where the odds of success are high due to the abundance of deer.

Applications will be accepted through Tuesday, Oct. 1. To apply for the hunt, please visit www.evergy.com/hunt.  For any questions please contact Shelly Gomez at 785-575-6355.
